If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
- Colossians 3:1-3
Just read this passage last night (Col 3). It was really a good reminder to fix my eyes and my mind on the things of God and not on this world... its not wrong to think about things that are in this world (which is definitely necessary...), so what does it mean to set our minds on things above?
Well.. i think that it means that we must let the things of God occupy our minds more than any other concerns or things... We must "seek the things that are above" -> meaning that our desires must not be for the things that are temporal and which will fade away.. .....definitely difficult!! To test what are you seeking (or desiring) today, ask yourself: what makes me excited today? what topics will make my eyes brighten and my heart beat faster when i talk about them? Those are the things that we truly seek and desire. From another point of view, we can also ask.. do the things above (prayer, God's Word, salvation of sinners, etc) make me passionate and excited, make my heart beat faster...?
Of course, to "set our minds" on these things also means that the things that God is concerned about are also our #1 concerns. And these things must be part of our considerations whatever we are doing in our daily life...
How can this be possible if the world has so many attractions and distractions already prepared for us 24/7? I guess one of the ways we can help each other is by obeying Colossians 3:16...
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
- Colossians 3:16
This is the way we should interact with brothers and sisters-in-Christ. Is God a part of our conversations all the time? Or are we just another social club?
May we remember that we... "have died" and that "Christ... is [our] life".
